The Hispanic Caucus has been deciding for weeks if they will accept or deny Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo’s bid to join the Caucus, and on Thursday it was announced that his bid was denied.
Curbelo represents a Latino-heavy district in Miami that is a top target for Democrats in 2018.
Some CHC members were turned off by Curbelo’s refusal to back the DREAM Act, their bill to grant legal status to young undocumented immigrants who could face deportation as soon as March.
Joe Walsh, former Congressman and now right-wing talk show host tweeted “Hispanic Congressional Caucus denies membership to a Hispanic Congressman. Why? Because he’s a Republican.”
