U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk revealed Monday morning in Chicago that he was no longer a member of the Republican Party. He told the Chicago Sun-Times that he would not be supporting fellow Republican Jim Oberweis in his race against Democrat Sen. Dick Durbin.
Kirk said he valued his relationship with Durbin too much to endorse Oberweis, and that if he endorsed Oberweis he’d be creating a, “partisan jihad.” The double standard here is troubling. Oberweis is a conservative Republican. Kirk is a liberal Republican. But they are both Republicans. We conservatives are always told that we have to support liberal Republicans because the party is a big tent. But it never works the other way around. Liberal Republicans like Kirk are not expected to support conservatives. Some big tent!
Mark Kirk’s relationship with Durbin is troubling enough. But by acknowledging that he values that relationship more than he values the Republican Party, Kirk can no longer call himself a Republican. As he won’t support a fellow Republican this year, Republicans throughout Illinois should refuse to support him if he runs in 2016.
Mark Kirk is no longer a Republican. He should never, ever run for office in this state as a Republican again. If he does, I will do whatever I can to make sure he never wins.
I still believe he’ll change parties between now and 2016 and become a Democrat. With his selfish move today, he already has become one.
