President Donald Trump further escalated his rhetoric towards Mexico on Friday, writing on Twitter that America’s southern neighbor has “taken advantage of the U.S.” and that the relationship between the two nations is in desperate need of a reset.
“Mexico has taken advantage of the U.S. for long enough. Massive trade deficits & little help on the very weak border must change, NOW!” he wrote Friday morning.
The charge that Mexico has benefitted at the expense of the United States is nothing new for Trump, who made similar claims throughout his presidential campaign and has continued to make them from the White House. But his post to Twitter on Friday comes just one day after Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto canceled a planned trip to Washington next week over Trump’s signature on an executive order kicking off construction of a border wall.
