TRUMP NAMED TOP GLOBAL ‘PRESS OPPRESSOR’

On Monday, President Trump won “Overall Achievement in Undermining Global Press Freedom” in the Press Oppressors Awards.

“While previous U.S. presidents have each criticized the press to some degree, they have also made public commitments to uphold its essential role in democracy, at home and abroad,” the committee who awarded Trump wrote, “Trump, by contrast, has consistently undermined domestic news outlets and declined to publicly raise freedom of the press with repressive leaders such as Xi [Jinping], [Recep Tayyip] Erdoğan, and [Abdel Fattah al-]Sisi.”

Former Congressman and right-wing talk show host, Joe Walsh, tweeted his response, saying “Journalists in Russia, Turkey, Syria, and Saudi Arabia are routinely jailed and tortured. But journalists in the U.S. who are mocked on Twitter by the President are the real victims of oppression. Right.”
